¡Hola! and Bonjour!

How we are implementing a dual- language curriculum across the school and developing a positive environment where language learning is enjoyed and celebrated.

Spanish in Nursery

Nursery children have been using their oral language skills to learn a song in Spanish. They were first taught their numbers to 5 and used their knowledge of British Sign Language to show the numbers on their fingers. They have been practicing their pronunciation with the help of the teacher. These children are beginning to understand that the world is made up of multiple nationalities with multiple languages. They are finding out that many of their peers speak different languages at home. They are enjoying finding out how diverse their classroom is and how they can all celebrate their heritages.

French in Year 2

Year 2 children are practicing French salutations. In this lesson, they have learnt to say ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’, ‘good morning’, and ‘good afternoon’. The children are working on the correct pronunciation for each salutation from a native French speaking staff member, then orally rehearsing the greetings to each other. The children then use this knowledge to answer morning and afternoon registers in French, enabling them to use what they have been taught in everyday situations.

French in Year 3

Year 3 children have been developing their language skills through an online platform called Linguoscope. This is a great example of the cross- curricular opportunities that language learning can offer. In this lesson, they had first practiced their numbers orally during class input. They were then taught the question ‘how old are you?’ and used their knowledge of French numbers to respond. They were then encouraged to practice what they had learnt with their peers. At the end of the lesson, the children were able to access Linguoscope on their iPad to further support their number learning. They were encouraged to pick games to play with each other to make the learning more engaging and exciting

Year 6 Spanish pronouns

An example of learning about pronouns and how to use these when introducing themselves to someone. In this lesson, the child has an oral review of previous vocabulary from the last lesson with their peers, which is facilitated by the teacher. After, the child is taught the day’s learning, in which he is encouraged to gather useful vocabulary throughout in his Spanish learning journal. At the end of the lesson, the child is then encouraged to use his prior learning and new knowledge to write a conversation in Spanish. Focusing on the correct spellings and the formation of unfamiliar letters and accents is also very important.
