James Wolfe school uniform policy

It is our school policy that all children wear school uniform when attending school. School uniform is part of the school ethos and in sending their child/ren to James Wolfe Primary School, parents agree to support our policy. School uniform may be purchased through the school supplier or from a high street/online shop.

Our policy on school uniform is based on the notion that school uniform:

  • Promotes a sense of pride in the school;

  • Creates a sense of community and belonging towards the school;

  • Identifies the children with the school;

  • Is practical and smart;

Our uniform consists of:

  • White or navy shirt or polo shirt (with or without the school logo)

  • Navy blue sweater, fleece or cardigan (we promote the wearing of jumpers/polo shirts with logos but plain versions in the school colours are accepted)

  • Black or grey trousers, shorts or skirts

  • Blue checked dress

  • Plain socks or tights in school colours (white, black, navy blue or grey)

  • Religious head coverings, including hijabs, turbans, and yarmulkes, are permitted in school colours or blue, black and white

  • Plain and discreet headbands and hair ties

  • A peaked cap for summer protection (sunglasses are not permitted for safety reasons unless there is a medical note from a doctor)

  • Elasticated bowtie or ties are permitted in the school colours.

Pupils may choose to wear any combination of the approved uniform items (trousers, shorts, skirts, or dresses) that they feel most comfortable in throughout the school year. We ask that children are dressed appropriately for the weather at all times.

Footwear

  • Black flat sensible, safe shoes or ankle high boots with good grip on the sole. Alternatively, smart, black trainers with no white or coloured flashes or patterns. For health and safety reasons, we do not allow pupils to wear shoes with platform soles, Heelys or high heels. Bright coloured laces are not permitted.

  • High heels, flip flops, open-toed sandals, steel toed shoes/boots and higher than ankle high boots are unsafe and not appropriate for school.

  • Pupils may wear wellington boots to/from school but will need to bring a pair of shoes to change into.

Make-up

  • No make-up is to be worn to school (this includes nail polish)

Hair

All neat, reasonable, and safe hairstyles are permitted, including those worn naturally for cultural or ethnic reasons (e.g., afros, twists, locs, braids).

Hair longer than shoulder length should be tied up away from the face for health and safety reasons.

PE Kit

  • White T shirt, shorts/tracksuit bottoms/sweatshirt in school colours

  • Trainers/black plimsolls

  • Swimming: swimming costume/trunks/jammers, towel, swimming hat is for all children and longer than shoulder length hair must be tied up. Please note the swimming pool does not permit goggles without a medical note.

Bags

  • School Book Bags and PE Bags can be purchased through the school office at £4 each. Children may purchase a school bag or bring a bag from home provisioning that it is large enough to hold the items they will be transporting to and from school safely.

Jewellery

For health and safety reasons, we do not allow children to wear jewellery. The exceptions to this rule are small objects of religious significance or stud earrings (one stud in each ear). Your child’s class teacher will advise you when PE lessons are to take place.

Adaptations for weather

 In the cold weather, particularly in the autumn and winter months, children are expected to wear coats and are permitted to wear a hat/ear-muffs, a scarf and gloves. Please ensure that all items are clearly named. Items such as polo-shirts/short-sleeved shirts, tailored shorts and summer dresses are all appropriate in the hot weather.

Please label all school clothes with your child’s name. We do our best to reunite children with clothes they leave around the playground and building. Any unnamed, misplaced property shall be placed in the lost property areas for this to be checked regularly by parents. After attempts to reunite property with the owner have been made, any unnamed unclaimed items shall be donated to the Friends of James Wolfe.

The role of parents

We believe that one of the responsibilities of parents is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform and PE kit, that it is clean, in good repair and that the child’s name is written on all items. If a parent has difficulties for any reason with fulfilling this request, they are asked to speak confidentially to a senior member of staff to discuss the issues.Parents should be assured that we will provide support where required to clothe children.

Children who arrive at school wearing non-school uniform or PE clothing will be loaned an appropriate item from school where possible. Parents will be contacted to discuss the matter should this be required.

The school welcomes children from all backgrounds and faith communities. Please ensure your child is aware of and adheres to our school uniform policy. We thank you for your cooperation in implementing this policy.
