Across year groups, carefully planned discussions and a range of interactive learning experiences have helped to develop a strong appreciation of languages and cultures within the classroom. These opportunities are embedded regularly into lessons and wider school activities, enabling pupils to explore different languages, compare cultures, and engage in meaningful conversations that promote curiosity, respect, and understanding of the wider world.
Salut, Ça va? - EYFS
In Reception, pupils have been introduced to French through basic conversational language. They have been learning how to introduce themselves and ask for someone’s name, as well as how to express different emotions so they can respond to the question “Ça va ?”. Through songs, actions, and short speaking activities, pupils practise listening to and repeating key words and phrases to support accurate pronunciation and develop early confidence in speaking French.
Buenos Tardes - KS1
In Year 2, pupils have been learning simple Spanish greetings and the days of the week. They practise listening to and repeating key words and phrases through songs, games, and short speaking activities to help with pronunciation and recall. Pupils also use these greetings in simple classroom conversations during Spanish lessons and at register time. This regular practice helps to build confidence in speaking, supports good listening skills.
Español Enthusiasts - LKS1
In Year 4, pupils have been strengthening their understanding of Spanish by developing their knowledge of simple greetings, including saying good morning and good afternoon in Spanish, as well as everyday classroom language. They practise listening to and repeating key words and phrases through songs, games, and short speaking activities to support accurate pronunciation and recall. Pupils also apply these greetings in simple classroom exchanges during Spanish lessons and at register time. This regular practice helps to build confidence in speaking and supports the development of attentive listening skills.
Un à Douze - UKS2
In Year 5, they have been exploring French this term and have made clear progress in basic spoken and written communication. Pupils have learned to count to 12 and state their age in French, use the months of the year accurately, and introduce themselves by giving their name, age, and birthday. They have also begun to describe themselves using simple adjectives, demonstrating an increasing understanding of sentence structure and pronunciation. As a writing outcome, pupils produced short self-introduction paragraphs in French, showing their ability to combine key vocabulary and simple phrases into coherent sentences with growing independence.
