A World of Fire & Ice
The geography learning represented here has a very global flavour, emphasising the ‘planet Earth’ and ‘further afield’ in our statement of intent. It also covers key areas of our curriculum content.
Dough-lightful Discoveries - EYFS
The children in Nursery have been learning about different countries around the world. When learning about Italy, the children listened to stories, learnt words in Italian, cooked pasta, played in §a pizza shop and made salt dough pizza. They showed great curiosity and loved making connections between where children in the class are from and what country was been learnt about.
Mapping Keys to Success - KS1
Our Year 2 children studied maps. In particular, the learnt how to read a key and to make their own key. The children then designed their own map of the local area using a key and a grid, with impressive accuracy. This also means that the children will be ready to move on to using grid references when learning about them in KS2.
Tectonic Thinkers Erupting with Ideas - LKS1
Year 3 has studied some physical geography in relation to the topic, ‘Extreme Earth, Volcanoes and Earthquakes’. The children learnt about tectonic plates and fault lines, the formation of volcanoes and the cause of earthquakes and tsunamis. The children considered what they would do if they lived in a country where these happen, and how Japan manages these risks. The children visited the Natural History Museum and attended a workshop about volcanoes and earthquakes.
Polar Thinking - UKS2
As part of the Year 5 topic, ‘Would You Be a Heroic Polar Explorer?’, the children’s geography learning focused on the North and South Poles. The children completed a Venn diagram to compare the Arctic to the Antarctic. For example, The Arctic has a permanent human population whereas the Antarctic does not. They also learned about how glaciers are formed before reflecting very maturely on the impact of man-made climate change upon the Earth’s polar regions.
