Spectacular Spanish Speakers

Across year groups, discussions, books, and interactive experiences has grown a strong appreciation for languages and cultures within the classroom.

Salut Les Amis - Nursery

In Nursery, with their families’ support, students have explored and shared what makes them unique! They have discussed language, food, dance, and music. Following this, Nursery have conti practising language by greeting each other in familiar languages. This not only excites the children by sharing something meaningful but also fosters pride in their culture. Their learning is proudly showcased in classroom displays.

Spanish Cuisine - Year 2

In year 2, pupils have expanded their vocabulary by exploring a wide range of Spanish food words while consolidating listening and speaking skills from the autumn term. They have progressed from linking pictures and words to writing sentences about their likes and dislikes, using new verbs and adjectives to describe fruits and vegetables. This learning supports cross-curricular links to English writing while encouraging curiosity about different foods.

Proper Pronounciation - Year 4

In Year 4, students have been trialling newly discovered Rachel Hawkes online resources and PowerPoints to enhance their language learning. These PowerPoints feature soundbites from a native speaker, allowing students to practise pronunciation with greater accuracy. Another key learning strategy that has been introduced is phonics lessons, which focus on sounds in the target language that differ from English. Each key sound is linked to an ‘iconic’ word, accompanied by a gesture and a picture, making it easier for students to remember. This multisensory approach, combining visuals and movement, reinforces learning in an engaging and interactive way.

Spectacular Spanish - Year 5

Year 5 pupils have deepened their appreciation for the Spanish language and culture by refining greetings and engaging in structured conversations to introduce themselves and ask others’ names. They have developed confidence in real-life exchanges by practising how to ask and respond about age. Additionally, they have expanded their descriptive language by using adjectives to articulate physical appearance, enhancing both their vocabulary and grammatical understanding. Through discussions and interactive speaking activities, pupils have improved their pronunciation, fluency, and ability to communicate effectively.
