Deaf-initely a Good Sign
A wider range of activities within BSL lessons, as evidenced below, has energised and engaged the children. Children are confident to try out their signing skills in class and around school with both children and adults.
Family and Places - Reception
In Reception children learnt the vocabulary for family members and for places that we visit. They then combined their knowledge to sign a short piece about places they have been to with their own families.
Check Please! - Year 1
In Year 1 children learnt the BSL signs for food and drinks. They role played ordering food in a cafe using sign, adding polite phrases such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.
Signs of Nature - Year 3
Year 3 learnt vocabulary related to the natural world, weather and animals. They discussed how to look after the world in BSL.
Regional Signs - Year 5
Year 5 explored artwork by Deaf artists. They then created their own pieces of work, inspired by sign and deafness. Year 5 also found out about regional signs and dialects. They researched and presented their findings about BSL sign variations across the UK.
