Faiths and Traditions
This term, our focus was on Shared Celebrations and Sacred Stories, exploring how religious identity was expressed through festivals, rituals, and community gatherings. Pupils investigated the significance of these events in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, and Hinduism, deepening their understanding of how collective celebration fosters a sense of belonging and reinforces core values. Each year group organised a trip or a visitor to support children’s learning.
Celebrating Birthdays in Many Ways - EYFS
Nursery talked about their own birthdays and listened to the story of Vaisakhi. By joining in with music and trying special foods, children have started to notice that people celebrate in different ways. This helps them learn to be kind to one another and makes every child feel that their own home traditions are important and valued by their friends.
Easter and New Life - KS1
Year 1 learned about Easter, looking at special symbols like the cross and new life. A visitor from our local church showed us how they celebrate this time of year, which helped the children see how people in our community live out their faith. Pupils have learned to name this festival and can talk about why this story is so important to their Christian friends and neighbours.
Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr - LKS1
Year 4 studied Islam, focusing on Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr. They welcomed a parent visitor who shared personal insights into fasting and prayer, which helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and lived faith. Pupils have developed a deeper appreciation for religious devotion and recognize how values like self-discipline and charity guide behavior in everyday life.
Trimurti and the Four Stages of Life - UKS2
Year 6 explored Hinduism, specifically the Trimurti and the four stages of life. By studying festivals like Maha Shivaratri, they analysed how complex concepts shape a believer’s life journey. This challenges pupils to reflect on their own moral choices and their responsibility to act with integrity. They have strengthened their ability to engage with diverse worldviews with empathy and respect.
