Landscapes & Biomes
The following examples of learning share a focus on the importance of outdoor learning when learning about geography. Not only does the outdoors provide direct contact with the theme being covered (such as weather) but it also creates a memorable learning experience for the children.
Learning Season Never Ends - EYFS
Reception have been learning about seasonal changes. They conducted a survey to see what signs of autumn they could observe. This is consistent with the school’s long term plan for geography, which states that, in EYFS, children should discuss features of their local environment.
Local Landscapes - KS1
Year 1 have been learning about human and physical features within their local area. They looked at maps of the local area and drew what they had seen. They have also identified how seasons change the world around them by doing nature walks and discussing the amount of daylight changes.
Climate Zones and Biomes - LKS1
Year 4 have learned about climate zones and biomes this term. In order to apply their learning to a memorable context, the children were asked to write a postcard from a chosen climate zone (such as tropical, polar or temperate). Some children also wrote impressive information booklets that went into detail about the nature of a particular climate zone and biome.
Olympus in London - UKS2
Year 6 have explored how the London Olympic Site has changed over time. They identified landmarks using six figure grid references and studied aerial photos . They examined how the 2012 Olympics and land use would have changed the use of the area. They were then able to evaluate their findings by visiting the park and got to visit attractions like the velodrome.
