Sum-Times Mathematical
Across all key stages, the primary curricular focus has been on developing a strong, flexible understanding of Number and Place Value, fostering speed (fluency), logical thinking (reasoning), and the ability to apply maths to solve problems (problem solving).
Maths Foundation, Brick by Brick - EYFS
In Reception, children are developing their number sense by exploring the composition and sequencing of numbers to five. Using cubes as manipulatives and a number line as a scaffold, they developed a deep and flexible understanding of numbers 1–5 and their relationships. This concrete, hands-on learning provides a solid foundation for confident counting and is essential for future formal calculations.
Follow the Communicative Law - KS1
In Year 2, children have built on their number sense from EYFS by exploring the composition of numbers through partitioning. This helped them understand the commutative law when writing addition number sentences. These vital strategies effectively prepare children for longer, more challenging arithmetic in Year 3.
D-Von, Get the Times Tables - LKS1
Year 4 have focused on securing their times tables and developing flexible arithmetic. They modelled problems, which assisted tricky subtraction (borrowing/exchanging), and extended place value to numbers up to 1,000. Mastery of these skills has improved fluency and secure conceptual models are embedded for the introduction of efficient multiplication and division in upper key stage two.
Getting Positives from the Negative - UKS2
Year 5 have used their knowledge of place value to read, write, order, compare, convert and round numbers to 1,000,000. They introduced negative numbers and explored additive structures, consolidating their understanding of the inverse operation. Students have proven a deep understanding through reasoning and multi-step problems, allowing them to confidently tackle advanced arithmetic and algebraic thinking needed for Year 6.
