From Signs to Stars
The photos below show the range of activities that deaf children take part in through their time at James Wolfe. It also highlights the importance of an individualised approach to planning and delivery to ensure that every child’s need is met. Interventions are well planned and resourced. Children are integrated as much as possible into mainstream. The centre provides a specialised curriculum with a nurturing atmosphere to allow children with language delay to make accelerated progress.
Role Play, Sign Away - EYFS
Nursery Centre children are fully integrated into mainstream and join in all the nursery activities. This year, they have made great progress on their signing skills, learning new vocabulary linked to their classroom topics. Role play is a great way to develop language, using signs like ‘fireman’ to act out being a fireman.
Cooking Up Vocabulary - KS1
The centre topic this term was ‘Recipes’. The children had a lot of fun, reading, making and writing recipes. The Year 1 children really benefited fro linking their learning to real life experience and support their language development. The children were able to learn new vocabulary and apply it into their daily lives. It also linked to their Shape Coding work, being able to identify imperative verbs and starting sentences with them. It was a great topic, that engaged the children and influenced their home lives. Lots have started baking at home too!
Cooking with Kindness - LKS1
Year 4 really enjoyed the ‘Recipes’ topic and it linked to their learning in their mainstream class. Royal Hill were able to come to Randall Place and have cooking sessions with all the Centre children. It was wonderful watching the year 4 children take the lead and read the recipe for the younger children. They measured together and followed the instructions carefully. We really enjoyed eating what they made!
Silent Stars - UKS2
Year 5 developed their writing and we were able to come up with our own Centre Recipe Book. The children enjoyed publishing their work and binding it together.
At the same time the entire Centre really enjoyed being part of a video project about Deaf awareness with the Greenwich Sensory Team. They all got certificates for their wonderful acting and contribution during a Deaf event at Royal Hill. We gathered with the Meridian children and enjoyed watching the movie and discussing the importance of Deaf awareness in our communities.
