Science
The images showcase children working scientifically and engaging in hands-on science activities that help build their science capital by linking their everyday experiences to scientific knowledge. In these images, children are actively exploring, experimenting, and discussing science concepts with their peers, which fosters curiosity and confidence. These experiences also help to strengthen their understanding of how science connects to real-life situations, ultimately encouraging them to see themselves as capable learners and future contributors to the field. Through collaborative activities and problem-solving, they not only build their knowledge but also expand their network of science-related experiences and opportunities.

Nursery have been making the most of the sunshine and warmer weather this term by planting seeds in their outdoor area. The children were full of excitement as they learned how to care for the seeds, including watering them regularly and making sure they had enough sunlight. This hands-on experience supports children Understanding the World, as they explore growth, change, and the natural environment. They are now eagerly watching their plants grow.

Year 1 predicted which objects would sink or float in water before testing them to see if they were right. They were surprised to discover that the heavy wooden block floated while the light piece of paper sank! Through investigation, they learned that an object’s material and shape can affect whether it sinks or floats - not just its weight.

In Year 4, pupils discovered that sound travels through the air as invisible waves. They explored this by using software like AudioMass to visualise sound patterns and by observing real-life vibrations - such as rubber bands moving when plucked or sprinkles jumping when a tuning fork was held nearby. These hands-on activities helped them understand that, although sound waves can't be seen, their effects can be observed in clever ways.

This term, Year 5 have been exploring the properties of materials, focusing on soluble and insoluble substances. Through practical investigations, they tested a range of materials to see which would dissolve in water and which would not. The children learnt to make predictions, carry out fair tests, and record their observations accurately. They developed a deeper understanding of how dissolving is a reversible change and how solutions can be separated using filtering. The topic sparked great curiosity and strengthened their scientific enquiry skills.
