Reception children have been designing superhero emblems as part of their ‘People Who Help Us’ topic. They thought carefully about the shapes, logos and colours to ensure that this reflected their chosen super power. After the design phase, Reception children have used their designs to sew their emblems, using the appropriate colour thread and fabric. If the design was too complicated to sew, they had to think carefully about how to adapt their design, while ensuring their super power was clear.

Year 1 have been designing fruit kebabs as part of their topic on ‘Carnival’. First, they learnt about healthy and unhealthy foods, including how to tell the difference between a fruit and a vegetable, and then they studied fruit to describe the look, texture, smell and taste. Finally, they made their fruit kebabs, choosing from a variety of fruits, considering which colours, textures and tastes would best compliment each other. Some children even made repeat patterns!

Year 4 designed and made their own Caribbean smoothies as part of their Dragon's Den Challenge. First, they completed taste testing and market research, identifying ingredients which they used to produce their own initial smoothie recipes. They made the smoothies, following their recipes, and tasted them to evaluate whether they needed any alterations. They also produced brand packaging, creating initial designs in groups and evaluating elements to take forward for their final designs. Their pitches included well explained design choices.

Year 5 designed and created their own Benin Bronzes. They researched the historical and cultural significance of the bronzes and applied this to their designs. They used their designs to create clay plaques, selecting appropriate tools and materials to shape and decorate their work as designed, using carving and moulding techniques. Pupils evaluated their final pieces against their original ideas, identifying successes and areas for improvement. Oracy played a key role, as pupils explained their design choices and reflected on their outcomes.
